ControlPoint supports standard htaccess and htpasswd security, allowing you to protect your site directories from unauthorized access. To manage your site's htaccess and htpasswd files, select "Security" on the Navigation Menu.

IMPORTANT: If you have FrontPage 2000 enabled, ControlPanel will warn you not to modify existing htaccess files. Failure to head this warning may lead to problems with FrontPage 2000.

To manage security for a particular directory, select it from the pulldown list of Site Directories, then click on "View Security". If the directory is already protected with a htaccess file, it will be marked as -->PROTECTED<-- in the pulldown list. Those directories not marked, are not protected.

Adding Security
To add security, select the target directory as described above. You will be presented with an Add htpasswd section.

Add in the username and password you wish to apply, and click on "Add User". The htaccess and htpasswd files will be updated in the appropriate directory, and the screen will redraw with the directory marked as -->PROTECTED<--. You may continue to add subsequent usernames and passwords.

Removing or Modifying Security.
To remove or otherwise modify security, select the target directory as described above. If you have just added initial security to this directory, you may already be at this screen.

To add additional username and passwords, follow the same steps as described in the above "Adding Security" section. To remove usernames and associated passwords, select the target usernames from the "Existing Web Users" listing, and click on "Remove". When all users have been removed, the htaccess and htpasswd files will be removed from the directory, and the -->PROTECTED<-- label will be removed from the directory listing.

Removing Security

Currently, you cannot modify the username or password of an existing entry. To achieve the desired effect, remove the entries, and add them again under the new username or password.
